Subject: Our latest pieces on the used oil heating ban - Minister Broten continues to completely ignore our communications
Importance: High

Dear Members of Provincial Parliament,

Here is the latest media coverage of NRSP’s investigation into Minister Broten’s decision to ban used oil heating in most of Ontario (underlined phrases are linked to the applicable Web pages) (interested media, scientists and engineers are blind Cc’d on this e-mail):

June 9, 2007: “Imposed bans may be more hurtful than helpful; Now it's used heating oil - what's next?”, Owen Sound Sun Times

June 6, 2007: “Burning questions”, by Dr. Tim Ball and Tom Harris, the Windsor Star.

Unfortunately, Minister Broten continues to ignore our communications entirely and so I ask again, “is it not normal practice for provincial MPPs, especially Ministers, to answer Ontarians when they write about an issue that concerns them?”

If the used oil heating ban was initiated to help the government look environmentally friendly, then I am afraid it is starting to have the exact opposite effect. Failing to even acknowledge our letters, courier packages and e-mails asking how she came to the her decision naturally leads us, the public, and increasingly the media to suspect that the Minister’s decision to ban used oil heating has no basis in science, engineering and economics and was done merely for political gain. This then has a strong potential to increase environmental damage over current methods of handling waste oil.

Sincerely,

Tom Harris, B. Eng., M. Eng. (thermofluids)
